Are you and your partner equally committed?

We all love a Hollywood romance, especially when it all works out and they stay together. One perfect example of this is Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka. They have been together for over a decade, are married, and have two children. But how do they do it? Especially under such public pressure?

We think one of the keys is commitment.

Commitment is important in any kind of relationship. It’s important for parents to be committed to their children’s wellbeing, managers to their employee’s happiness, and partners to each other. But it’s a fine balance. If one person is less committed than the other, it can cause a relationship to flop.

Sometimes, being invested when it’s clear the other person is not can tire you out. It shouldn’t be down to one person to keep the commitment up if the other isn’t trying.

However, sometimes the blame doesn’t always fall on the other party… It can be hard to maintain a level of commitment with someone else if your relationship with yourself is failing.

Will Smith said that “The central idea of love is not even a relationship commitment, the first thing is a personal commitment to be the best version of yourself with or without that person that you’re with.”

Maybe being committed to and honest with yourself is the best way to strike the balance.

It’s important to understand your own limits and to be committed to looking after yourself. Be honest with yourself and your partner about how committed you are, and where you’re still growing in trust. Relationships work best if both people respect the pace of the other. Open, honest conversations are the best way to build a strong relationship.

And remember, you don’t have to be in a relationship to be happy. Being committed to yourself and bettering your life is just as important!
