Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is out today (Thursday 14th December), so Status thought it would be cool to take a look at the best relationship in the Galaxy – the relationship between Han Solo and Princess Leia.
By Rob Edwards
Star Wars is a wonderful thing. Filled with great characters, awesome effects and three entire films to make us love the three that came before them even more than we already do.
Growing up I was obsessed with everything Star Wars. One thing I never truly appreciated was the core relationship between Han Solo and Princess Leia. He’s a lovable rogue while she’s a princess for an entire planet and from the moment they first lay eyes on each other there is romance in the air…. Wait, no, that was blaster fire from Stormtroopers.
Here are their 7 best moments:
1) They meet
It’s fair to say these two didn’t meet under normal circumstances, in a bar or whatever the local version of Tinder is in that galaxy. While under fire these two’s first words to each other are a criticism and a threat, which admittedly isn’t the best of starts but I challenge anyone to come up with good flirtatious banter while under fire. But Han does say to Luke that she is a wonderful girl and that he’s either going to kill her or beginning to like her.
2) The wink
It’s the end of New Hope and there is this big ceremony to thank Luke, Han and Chewbacca for their service in destroying the Death Star. Han gives Leia the daddy of all winks, it’s the sort of wink saying “Once the party’s done, you’re coming back to the Millennium Falcon with me.”
3) Scruffy-looking Nerf-herder
Once we move on to The Empire Strikes Back, their relationship reaches the next level and these two can just not stop with each other, arguing that is. But it’s the type of heated arguing you only really do with someone you’re really trying to undress at some point.
Han Solo is as arrogant as ever, leading Leia to drop the bomb and call him a Scruffy-looking Nerf-herder and snog Luke (we’d only learn how weird that was in the next film). Maybe it’s a bit one-sided because as chill as Han Solo probably is about a lot of things, I’m not sure he’d be up for snogging Luke just to get even.
4) The first kiss
A first kiss can be the make-or-break moment for a budding relationship and Han Solo and Leia knock theirs out of the park with a dozy of a kiss in the engine of the Millennium Falcon. After all the tension between these two this kiss was a one hell of a release. They may have gone even further if C-3PO hadn’t walked in like the walking golden cock-block he is (and if it wasn’t also a kids’ film).
5) I Love you/I know
This is THE Han and Leia moment to end all Han-Leia moments. Right before Solo is frozen in carbonite, Leia tells Han she loves him for the first time and what does this cock-sure rogue on the brink of what could be death say? “I know”. Most of us non-badass people would have said “I love you too”, but Han is just better than us and so with just two words he manages to capture the entire spirit of the relationship right then and there.
6) I love you/ I know (See what they did there?)
They’re trapped! On the forest moon of Endor our young lovers are surrounded by Stormtroopers, with Leia being hit, everything is looking dark. That is until she shows Han her hidden gun to which Han says “I love you.” She then kills two men. If I could give any advice to you out there I would say find someone who looks at you the way Han looks at Leia. It’s a lovely call-back to when Leia confesses her love in The Empire Strikes Back.
7) The End
* SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ANYONE WHO HASN’T SEEN THE FORCE AWAKENS*
Han Solo is killed by his son, and the pain of this is felt (thanks to the Force) halfway across the galaxy by General Leia. It’s just heartbreaking to see the pain on her face as it begins to dawn on her what just happened. Leia barely grieved when her planet was blown up, but this is the moment she is truly hurt and it kills me every-time.
