For the love of porn

As humans, we want love, affection and companionship, but my journey of searching for these led me one lonely evening to porn. Though it gave me a temporary high, it left me disgusted as I looked at the tissues on the floor and became fearful that someone would find out what I’d done.

As time went on however, I discovered how damaging my new “hobby” could be. Every hit reinforced the feeling of emptiness, leaving me wanting more. I was addicted to the drug that is porn. So I took a look into it and found out the real impact of porn on the user, their relationships and society.

Porn rewires the brain

I discovered watching porn changed how I saw the opposite sex, seeing them as objects to be used rather than as people with feelings. Studies have shown that porn is addictive and with every addiction comes devastating effects. Imagine not being able to concentrate in class or work and wanting nothing more than to go home and watch porn! The effects were crippling.

Relationships suffer

Relationships are one of the first things to suffer when porn comes on the scene. Whether it’s a couple who decide to try it out as a way to “strengthen their relationship” or a partner watching it alone, it often evolves into something neither of them bargained for.  With unrealistic ideals and body types being portrayed, real life partners never seem to measure up to the “perfect” ones seen on screen. The partner on the other end of this is often left feeling hurt, shattered and betrayed, even in cases where cheating has not even occurred.

Porn preys on vulnerable people

As someone who watched porn, I discovered it was hypocritical of me to be appalled at human trafficking. Studies show that pornography creates a demand for people being trafficked as large percentage of women, and shockingly, children in the porn industry are trafficked.

This article only begins to scratch the surface of porn’s damaging effects. You can find out more at www.fighthenewdrug.org. As a culture, It’s time to collectively fight this new drug wreaking havoc in our society.
