We get distracted easily. We have new music to listen to, people to see, notifications to check. With so much “little” stuff competing for our attention, it’s no surprise it can distract us from the “big” stuff. The problem is, we only build skills and values if we commit to ourselves. Here are 3 signs that you need to commit to yourself in 2019.
1. You procrastinate
Sitting on your goals is a sign you are not committed to yourself. This is especially the case when it comes to growing your skills and your confidence – these obviously don’t belong on the back burner. As a famous Chinese proverb says, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Small seedlings planted now will grow into big trees over time.
2. You’re not into self-care
Self-care is essential for well-being and shows you’re committed to yourself. Do you take time to rest, have fun, exercise and eat well? Good self-care will put you in the right frame of mind to tackle daily life well. Your attitude toward the small things will reflect your attitude toward the big things. Look after the little details well, and you’ll be better prepared to take on the ones that really matter.
3. You’re your own worst critic
How do you take a compliment? Can you say “thank you,” or do you explain why you don’t deserve it? How do you cope with failure? Are you kind or cruel to yourself? Be your own biggest advocate. Self-commitment is also self-love and the only road to both achievement and wellbeing.
When you master the art of self-commitment, you’ll build the values and skills you need. As a bonus, you will find you’re better prepared for the commitment of a relationship too. It’s just as important to meet your self-improvement goals as it is to help others meet theirs.
